Gutters are designed to move the water that falls on your roof away from the sides of your house, so that it doesn’t pool and damage your foundation. In any structure, keeping the ground surrounding the foundation as dry as possible is critical. 

To accommodate the specific angle of your roof, the gutter must be hung at a pitch so that water will collect inside the gutter rather than flow in front of or behind the gutter. Over time, gutters may loosen from their joints and disrupt the pitch, causing water to flow behind the gutter and along the roof line instead.

If the water leaks behind the gutters,  it can back up onto the roof, where it could cause rotting, damage exterior walls and possibly leak into the structure.  Long term leaking can damage foundations.  This problem can be eliminated with diligent gutter maintenance, repair or replacement.
